April 21 is the annual Washington Coast Cleanup Day.

For those who like pristine beaches, here is a volunteer opportunity for you: April 21 is the annual Washington Coast Cleanup Day.

Each year Washington Coast Savers organizes more than 1,000 volunteers to descend upon our coastal beaches and haul out trash - to the tune of more than 20 tons each year! With Japanese tsunami debris just now reaching our shores, this clean-up takes on added urgency.

Volunteers can select their choice of beach on the Washington Coast Savers website. Beaches range from those within deep coastal wilderness to easily accessible beaches suitable for the whole family to participate. On the day of the event, you'll don gloves, grab a big garbage bag and a picker, and start plucking plastic bottles, lost fishing gear, and other ocean trash that has washed up on our Pacific beaches.

Sign up today and then post a Trip Report after your clean-up to help educate other hikers about what they can do to protect our beaches and coastal wildlife.
