From a new Science and Learning Center at Mount St Helens to yurt camping at Coho and the closure of the Kloshe Nanitch Lookout, catch up on the latest hiker headlines

We've looked back at the month and rounded up a few headlines you may have missed while eeking out the last of the sunshine on trail last month. Now that the rains are here, catch up on some Washington hiking news.

Open to Hikers: Trails, Science Center, Yurt Camping

More trails and roads open in the Wenatchee River Ranger District after seasonal weather removes wildfire danger. See the updated list of open and closed trails via the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest

A new Science and Learning Center opened at Mount St. Helens and will be open to visitors on weekends in November and December. The Elk Bench Trail starts near the building and connects with the Lakes Trail. Adjacent to the Science and Learning Center is the accessible Winds of Change Trail, a ¼-mile paved path leading through a part of the Blast Zone. A pet rest area is located within the Coldwater Lake parking area. To visit: The facility is located at milepost 43 on State Highway 504, approximately 10 miles west of Johnston Ridge Observatory. New yurt rentals opened in Coho Campground in Olympic National Forest and will be available on a “first come, first served” basis until November 17, when the campground will close for the season. Find out more via the Olympic National Forest

Goodbye to Klosche Nanitch Lookout

The Olympic National Forest recently removed the Kloshe Nanitch Lookout after vandals and structural deterioration turned it into a safety hazard The Kloshe Nanitch Trail remains open, and plans are already underway to build an observation deck where the fire lookout used to be. The observation deck is expected to be completed next summer.
