Hiker Headlines: Goodbye 2020, Winter Wonders, the Other Washington

It’s December 30. As the year ends, we look back on all the great work WTA and the hiking community accomplished in 2020. Getting outside during the winter is great for mental health, plus fee-free days make it easy to explore new state parks. Mount Rainier announced changes to their winter activities. And congressmembers in Washington D.C. asked for funding for local parks. Here’s some news you may have missed while out on trail this week.

2020 accomplishments: Despite the many challenges of 2020, WTA's community came together this year to do so much great work. We adapted our programs so we could continue delivering for Washington’s trails, and the hiking community showed up by volunteering, writing trip reports and engaging as members. Thanks to everyone who made this work possible.

Step outside: It can be hard to get outside during Washington winters but heading out, even for 5 minutes, is great for mental health. Consider some new ways to engage with the outdoors this winter. And, Washington State Parks has two fee-free days coming up on January 1 and January 18. January 1 is free to encourage visitors to participate in the nationwide First Day Hike. There will be no in-person events this year, but you're encouraged to continue the tradition by planning your own outing. WTA Pro Tip: if you already have a Discover Pass, consider planning a hike on a different day of the week to celebrate while avoiding crowds.

Winter at Mount Rainier: Some facilities and events may be cancelled this winter due to COVID-19. Mount Rainier recently announced what’s open and what’s closed at Longmire and Paradise this season. Wherever your winter adventures take you, do your research and be sure to go prepared for facilities and services to be limited or closed.

The other Washington: A group of congressmembers recently wrote a letter to House leaders requesting stimulus funding for local parks. Among the members leading this effort was Representative Deb Haaland, who was selected by President-elect Biden to be the next Secretary of the Interior. If confirmed, she will become the first Native American to hold this office.
