In remembrance: Earlier this year, Leonard Sauer — the man who built the popular Sauer's Mountain Trail — passed away. After dedicating two summers of his retirement to carving out a trail on his property, Sauer generously opened it up to hikers, who flocked from across the state. The trail became a favorite, and a go-to location for novice and experienced hikers alike to enjoy blooming balsamroot in spring when high country trails are under snow. Sauer's family wishes to thank the many kind hikers from around the world who stopped to visit with Leonard at the trailhead over the years. If you have a fond memory of meeting Leonard, you can share it with the family here.

MLK Day: Parking and entry fees are waived across many public lands on January 18 in honor of MLK Day, including land managed by the Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service, the U.S. Forest Service and Washington State Parks. It’s a great chance to explore somewhere new. When you get home from your adventure be sure to file a trip report to share your experience with other hikers.

Busy slopes: The Paradise snow play area at Mount Rainier has opened to sledding for the season. Reports show that parking lots at this and other popular sledding areas are filling up by 9:00 a.m., especially on weekends. It’s important to only park in designated areas and go prepared with a plan B and C, or consider a snow-free adventure instead.

State budgets: WTA announced our budget priorities for the 2021 state legislative session. Learn more about the specifics and join your fellow hikers by signing in support of these priorities.

Public input: Public comment periods are open for two important planning processes, Washington Department of Wildlife’s acquisition of new land, and the Washington State Department of Transportation’s Active Transportation Plan.
