Washington Trails Day was a success: On August 1 the hiking community came together to celebrate Washington Trails Day in a big way. Over 800 people donated, took action and shared their stories about why they need trails — some well-known state legislators even participated.
Expect delays on Icicle Road: As part of an ongoing effort to improve water supply while aiding fish recovery in the Icicle Watershed, several new infrastructure improvements will be installed along the creek this summer. To accommodate construction, Icicle Road will be reduced to one lane between milepost 4.7 and 4.9, on weekdays between August 5 and September 9. Expect delays, and plan accordingly.
Share your thoughts: Several different land managers are seeking public input as they plan future projects. Pierce County Parks is asking for community input to plan the future of the Carbon River Corridor, an area outside the northwest entrance to Mount Rainier National Park. The Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest is accepting comments on proposed trail projects in the Heybrook Ridge and Blanca Lake Areas. And North Cascades National Park wants to know what you think about proposed changes to camping fees in the park.
The Great American Outdoors Act signed into law: It’s official, the Great American Outdoors Act was signed into law by the President on August 4. In commemoration of this day, Secretary of the Interior David L. Bernhardt announced that August 4 will be an annual fee free day for National Parks from here on out.
Wildfire season is heating up: We are in the midst of wildfire season. So far there have only been a few fires across the state, but it’s a good idea to start brushing up on fire safety, observe all burn bans and check conditions before you go.
