Hiker Headlines: Jobs, Permits, Bridges, Snow and Mud

Work has wrapped up on two historic bridges at Deception Pass. Hikers should avoid hiking on muddy trails in Eastern Washington. And, expect snow at the mountain passes this weekend. Here's some news you may have missed while out on trail this week.

WTA is hiring: We are currently hiring for several positions both in the field and in the office. Check out our job postings and apply today to support trails as part of the WTA staff.
North Cascades permitting: North Cascades National Park recently announced they will be processing backcountry permits online through recreation.gov starting this year. This new system will include an early access lottery and a general on-sale period in addition to walk-up permitting at the wilderness information center in Marblemount.
Work complete on Deception Pass bridges: The two historic bridges that span Deception Pass have been getting a makeover and are now finished. The work involved structural repairs as well as a fresh coat of paint. Hikers can get great views of the bridges along the trails at Deception Pass State Park.
Please stay off muddy trails: If you are hiking in Eastern Washington this winter, remember to stay off of muddy trails. Because of the freeze thaw cycle across the region, the indentations left in muddy trails can cause permanent damage to trail tread.
More snow in mountain forecasts: Snow is forecasted to return to the mountains this weekend. If you plan on traveling across the mountain passes, be sure to check conditions on the roads and, as always, the avalanche conditions on the slopes.
