National Trails Day: This Saturday, June 3, is National Trails Day, a day to advocate for and maintain our trails. Looking for something to do? Voice your support for the Transit to Trails Act, a federal grant program to connect more communities to trailheads and public lands. Come celebrate the day with Pierce County Parks with activities, hiking information and more fun from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Meridian Habitat Park Nature Classroom. And if you want to work on trail, join WTA in the Big Quilcene River Valley or at Blanchard Mountain for a work party!
Spokane hikes: Join WTA and Spokane Libraries for an exploration of the best hikes within a day of Spokane. WTA staff member Holly Weiler will share details and photos of local trails and talk about appropriate gear. She'll also discuss tips for hiking with children and how to get involved and give back. There are two sessions: June 3 from 11 a.m. to noon at the South Hill Library, and June 6 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Shadle Park Library. The latter session will also be live-streamed on the library’s YouTube channel.
Forest road statuses: Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has been checking on its forest roads as snow has melted and discovered that there is significant damage to some roads due to extreme weather, including high temperatures. If you're planning to visit, check with the ranger districts for the most recent updates on forest roads.
Road closure: Cleator Road in Larrabee State Park will be closed (including to foot traffic) from June 5 through June 15. This closure will restrict access to the Two Dollar Trail and Rock Trail trailheads. Both trails can still be accessed via the larger Larrabee State Park/Chuckanut trail network.
Campground closure: The Twanoh State Park campground will be closed to camping between July 5 and Sept. 30. The large day-use area will be closed during this time, and other day use lots may be closed at various times.
