It’s Thursday, August 15. There’s a new Deputy Regional Forester in town, and she’s stoked to supervise. Upcoming trail and road closures mean opportunities for new hiking discoveries. And thanks to our hiking community, trails are successfully getting rebooted.

Here’s what you might have missed while out on trail this week.

New forester: Gina Owens has been named the new Deputy Regional Forester for the Forest Service’s Pacific Northwest region. Beginning in September, she’ll be responsible for managing 24.7 million acres in Washington and Oregon by collaborating with multiple partner agencies and stewards.

Mount Ellinor closed: Trailhead access for Olympic Peninsula’s popular Mount Ellinor trail will be closed from August 18 - 30 for another round of goat relocation. Need an alternative hike? Try the less populated, but equally challenging, Valhalla Peak

North Fork Sauk closed: Speaking of closures, the Sloan Creek/North Fork Sauk Road 49 will be impassable August 19 -23 and again August 26 -30. In addition, access to Bald Eagle Trailhead will be closed the weekends of August 17/18, 24/25 and 31/1. Want another way to access Bald Eagle? Start at Quartz Creek instead

Trail wins: WTA is thrilled to celebrate these five notable trail success stories, brought about because of hikers like you who responded to our survey regarding your most pressing trail concerns. Thank you for being a part of our Trails Rebooted campaign!

I don't know about offering Quartz Creek as alternate access to Bald Eagle when that road is also still closed. :/

Hi Boots on Trail! Thank you for your comment. You are correct - the access road is closed about 4 miles from the Quartz Creek Trailhead, as noted in our Hiking Guide. We hope hikers are willing to embrace the additional mileage in order to help keep this gorgeous trail in use!
