WTA is celebrating the trails of Washington on August 3 by getting hikers new and old out on trail. From magnificent vistas, old growth forests and coastal views, to impressive waterfalls, wildflower fields and nature sightings, there's no shortage of great places to share with a beginning hiker.
Tips for taking a new hiker on trail:
Choose an awesome hike! That's our #1 piece of advice. Turn them into a lifelong hiker by taking them on a hike that's gorgeous, but not too hard. We have suggestions and advice for families as well as beginners in our Hiking 101 feature. Among WTA's seasonal features, look for trails that are less than 5 miles and 1000 feet of elevation gain to begin.
Make sure your new hiking buddy is well-equipped with the right gear. Good shoes, food and water, layers of clothing are a must! Find a good list of what hikers need to wear and have in their backpacks here.
When out on the trail, hike at their pace. Stop often to drink and refuel with snacks, and don't be too destination-driven that they get discouraged.
