Wallace Lake - Greg Ball Trail
Driving Directions:
From Seattle, drive north on I-5 to Everett and take exit 194 onto US 2. Drive east highway 2 until you get to Startup (2 mi east of Sultan) and look for Doug's RV at the east side of town. A sign will reference Kellog Road. Turn left on Kellog and drive @ 1/4 mile up to the fork. Continue straight to the gate and wait. (Driving time from Seattle: approximately 1.1 hours.) Also, if you wish to avoid I-5 and the Everett traffic and you are coming from the south, you can drive I-405 north from Bellevue and just before Woodinville turn onto Highway 522 to Monroe/Stevens Pass. At Monroe you join Highway 2 and continue according to the above instructions. Recent Trip Reports

Trail snowed in from the beginning of the Greg Ball trail but well compacted and do-able without traction devices. We didn't posthole until we carved our own path along the road around the lake. Plenty of blowdowns under the canopy of the last stretch of road to Wallace Falls. The .1 mile diamond-marked route connecting the road to the falls can be very icey and slippery. Some compacted, slick snow between lower and upper falls. Very cold at the lake.
No water from the water fossett at the trailhead! 10+ miles roundtrip. Hike time: A slow 6+ hours due to all of the snow. Day hike

Finally decided to check out Wallace State Park after driving by the turn sign from highway, and I'm glad I did! What a beautiful park and the trails are well maintained. The first mile seems like you are hiking at a man made attraction park (Universal or Disney). But then the trail begins it's many asscents to the middle and upper falls. There are plenty of places to sit and relax and even picnic tables at the lower falls.
Trail is well marked, and there is even a side trail to Wallace Lake (highly recommended) that will add an additional 4.5 miles to the hike. No issues with the sun, because most of hike is in heavy forest canopy, so this makes a great hike for everyone, or even a rainy day hike. Day hike

Clear and sunny day, accessed lake via trail from Wallace Falls. Bugs, especially BiG horseflies were persistant the last mile and half to lake. Was suprised that I had the entire lake to myself. Not clear where the beachfront was, either I missed the signs or there aren't any, so I walked about half a mile around the lake and found a clearing at the middle of the trail. Nice secluded beach area, but couldn't stay longer due to the bugs. Definitely bring bug spray, bandana (to swat the buggers!) and maybe a light hoodie to protect your face. All in all worth the side trip after Wallace Falls.

Easy trek up the hill to the lake via this trail--very secluded compared to the Woody trail. Today, the lake was in the fog (2nd time in a week for fog-hidden lakes!) so decided not to go further to Jay Lake. Then decided to do the loop and took the trail to the Upper Falls. A bit muddy and wet in spots but also some nice flowers lining the trail. The falls are profuse for August and actually visible (could not even see the beautiful valley view today). Many people going up as we were coming down--again,another reason to do the loop.
