We, a group of four, hiked Stegosaurus Butte and then attempted rainy lake trail to see if we could climb up Preacher Mountain during Winter.
To our disappointment, the bootpath was covered in snow and navigation was difficult and time-consuming because the snow was not deep enough for snowshoes, but we potholed a lot without snowshoes. We turned around after 1-2 miles.
The middle fork trailhead was covered by snow and ice, high-clearance vehicle is recommended.

That's some ugly-looking snow :-) What's the mapping app you are using?

Hi, great TR. I'm considering heading up to Rainy to check on this next weekend, if you'd like to join? Based on the last trip reports from Rainy Lake to Preacher Summit is often doable on snowshoes through March. I'm itching to get up there, so let me know if you'd like company with next attempt :)
