Hiking Blazed Ridge

The Blazed Ridge trail begins at 4100 feet and is a multi-use trail open to hikers, horses, bicycles, and motorbikes. It looks like it is very well-used by motorbikes, as the trail tread is quite loose and there is a deep trough in some parts climbing up to the ridge. The trail starts off in a dark second- or third-growth forest with little understory and heads south climbing steadily up to the ridge, heading through a half-mile stretch of private land and across a road, and reaches the ridge at 5300 feet in a little over one mile. There are many logged sections in the first mile of the trail.

The second mile along the ridge is fairly flat with excellent views to the east, to a rocky ridge of comparable height to Blazed Ridge, and to the north and northeast to Mount Daniel and Mount Hinman as well as the Enchantment Range.

This section of the ridge also has a few wildflower species in early summer:  lupine, silver crown, bear grass, stonecrop, and rock penstemon.  There are several rock outcroppings which make nice sitting spots.

The last mile of the ridge descends a few hundred feet and climbs back up to the terminus of the trail at 3.4 miles and 5500 feet.  From the end of the Blazed Ridge trail, you can connect to the Manastash Ridge trail (Trail 1388), Mount Clifty (Trail 1322.2), or Greek Creek Basin (Trail 1321.2).

Getting There

From I-90 eastbound, take exit 62 and turn right (heading south) at the stop sign onto Stampede Pass Road.  All mileages are from the stop sign after exiting I-90 from here on.

At 1.1 miles the pavement ends.

At 3.5 miles turn left onto Forest Road 41.

At 10 miles turn right onto Forest Road 4110.  There is a sign at this intersection that says Trail 1318 7 miles and Trail 1333 (Blazed Ridge) 10 miles.

It is 10.3 miles to the Blazed Ridge trailhead from this intersection, heading south and then east.

The trailhead is marked with a sign stating who can use this trail, but it does not mention Blazed Ridge.  It can take up to 90 minutes to reach the trailhead (roughly 20 miles on dirt road) once you have exited I-90.  There is no parking lot, but there is ample room along the roadside.
