Hiking Foothills Trails

The Foothills Trail System sits just south of Port Angeles and west of Hurricane Ridge Road. This patch of DNR land is a working forest interlaced with an 11-mile trail system that is open to hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders and off road vehicles. Different trails are open to different users so you should be able to find the experience you’re looking for. To get the most solitude as a hiker, consider heading here during the week when you’re likely to encounter fewer motorized vehicles on the trails.

Because it’s a working forest, these trails traverse through patches of clearcut and young forest, incorporating logging roads into some routes. Take note that certain areas may be temporarily closed due to logging operations and logging machinery may be present on the roads. Please respect closure signs. Additionally, certain trails are off-limits to hikers so having a map of the area will be helpful, not just for navigating, but also to figure out which trails are fair game.

The viewpoint noted on the map makes a great destination with views down to Port Angeles and out across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to Canada and beyond. By combining trails and logging roads you can also make a loop of around 10 miles for a longer day.
