In 2015 the City of Olympia acquired this forested land with a grant from the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office. After multiple years of planning, the park is slated to become the city’s first park with dedicated mountain-biking trails and are proposed to include multi-use and hiking-only trails.
Until then, this 1.25 mile loop traverses around the property and offers rolling hills amid trees dripping with moss and ferns dotting the landscape. Be aware that there are many spurs and connections to the Black Hills biking trails so a map will be handy.
Start at the small parking area on Park Drive SW and head to the right at the fork just after the maintenance building. After 0.3 miles, the trail will head up a short hill and you’ll arrive at the power lines which mark the western boundary of the park.
Turn left and follow along the power line trail for another 0.3 mile. At the crest of the short, steep hill, turn left to return to the forested trail. (To lengthen the loop and stay on a wider, less rocky path, continue straight and turn left on the access road, where you can continue the loop by taking one more left at the first road gate to re-enter the woods).
At 0.8 miles, take a left at the connector’s trail end and after another 0.1 mile, take the opportunity to head left into a small side loop into a clearing. Return to the main trail, turning left to continue until you reach the fork at the beginning of the trail. Head right at this intersection to return to the start of the trail.
