Accessible by boat or by foot only via a sandy tombolo at low tide, McMicken Island Marine State Park has over a quarter-mile of shoreline to explore — and the hike over (if you choose to take it) is incredibly scenic in its own right. Continue reading

Hiking McMicken Island Marine State Park

Looking for a unique hiking adventure? Plan out your day around the tides in the Puget Sound and head to McMicken Island, which is only accessible by foot when the tides are low and the walkable tombolo has surfaced.

Start at Harstine Island State Park, and head down to the beach on the forested Beach Loop Trail. Hike south on the beach for a little over a mile to see McMicken Island and the raised tombolo to your left when the tide is low. Be careful to study tide charts before heading over so you don't get stuck on the island at high tide!
