Hiking Port Gamble Heritage Park - Stottlemeyer Loop

Port Gamble’s Heritage Forest Park has long had excellent access from the northern end, but now — thanks to WTA crews — there is a 0.4-mile trail connecting the opened-in-2024 Stottlemeyer trailhead to existing Heritage Forest Park trails. This trail network is open to equestrians, mountain bikers and hikers, with many trails open to all users, and others restricted to mountain bikers.

From the roadside signage, walk eastward along Stottlemeyer Road for a minute to turn left onto Hyper Space Trail. The route starts in sunny, scrubby terrain but quickly changes to a darker, forested walk. At 0.34 mile, stay straight onto Outer Limits (Hyper Space continues to the right). At 0.4 mile, turn left onto #1810, and at 0.7 miles bear left to turn onto Flash. From here, there is a gentle ascent to Ridge Trail at 0.85 mile; turn right here and bear left at 1 mile in to stay on Ridge. Here it’s classic PNW forested land — salal, fern and cedar galore.

Wander along, turning right at 1.3 miles onto #1800, then right onto #1810 at 1.7 miles. Go left on Hyper Space at 1.9, turn left with it to return to the roadside trailhead.

WTA Pro Tip: Do take a picture of the trail map, as not many are posted in the interior of the forest. With so many route options — some open to multi-use, some not — a GPS trail app would be helpful if sticking to an exact route is preferable. There are many trails you can use to extend your hike, and a GPS app can help you craft your own.
