Begin at the Wing Luke Museum on the corner of S. King Street and Canton Alley. Located in the East Kong Yick building, the museum has excellent exhibits about the Asian American experience, and features a small 1910s shop that visitors can explore to see what it was like to shop in the ID in early 1900's Seattle.
Around the corner on 7th Avenue to the south is the Chong Wa Benevolent Association. Cross the street, then walk back up 7th and around the corner back to King Street. On this corner is the Louisa Hotel, which provided housing and storefronts for Asian American laborers. Black residents of Seattle also lived here, and nearby Jackson Street featured many nightclubs since Black musicians were limited to living south of Yesler and east of 8th Avenue.
At the west end of the block, the route turns south again, passing three landmarks on this route: Tai Tung, Eastern Hotel, and Regional Phillipine Grand Lodge — A restaurant, a hotel, and a fraternal lodge for Filipinos.
Walk another two blocks south to halfway down Maynard. Across the block is Bush Gardens, which opened in 1957 and was a popular place for karaoke starting in 1970. Sadly it closed in 2023, but the sign remains.
Turn around and head back up to King street, then turn west and walk to 6th street. As you walk, you'll pass Hing Hay Park with a large red sculpture. This remains a popular gathering place in the ID.
Turn onto 6th and walk two blocks north. On the left is the site of International Realty, started by Jim Matsuoka in 1946 after returning to Seattle following his family's incarceration during World War II. On the right, near S. Main is the site for the NP Hotel. Turn right onto Main and walk uphill to Danny Woo Community Garden, at the entrance of Kobe Terrace Park. This community garden still houses several garden plots that residents of the area use. And the park itself is gorgeous in spring, with cherry blossoms, lanterns, and even the occasional trillium, which you can see if you walk up the stairs through the community garden, then down the paved trail back to 7th Avenue south.
Go one block south to Jackson Street, then turn up towards 8th, walk a block south, and turn right onto King Street to get back to Wing Luke.
