After setting up camp at the nearby Gold Basin Campground, we decided to visit Big Four for the first time! Even though it was a weekday, the trail was plenty busy with families enjoying the river and the view of the cave. The trail is very well maintained and in frequent use and I'm so glad we finally made it and will definitely see them again!

During the summer the ice can melt and give way without notice and it was quite anxiety-inducing watching small children and dogs approach the caves, especially with the memorials and signage near the viewpoint. I don't know that there's a safest way to enjoy these caves up close, although we're drawn by curiosity to do so. No judgement here, because I also wished I could look up into the cave, though chose not enjoy from a distance.
