Trail snow-covered at times - gear and expertise recommended

Everybody knows Steptoe Butte as a drive-up but in winter when the summit road is not plowed, it makes for a good snowshoe and cross country ski destination. The entry road is normally plowed to the picnic area but presently it is gated at the highway entrance which makes for an 8.2 mile RT to the summit with about 1,125' of gain. When the road is open to the picnic area take a couple miles off that figure.

The grade is easy enough for beginning skiers and was packed down by snowmobiles during my trip.

Weather began to move in as I made it to the summit so I did not linger long as winds can become fierce up there.
