We arrived at the trailhead on a Saturday morning around 9:15 am? And there were already quite a few cars parked all along the road (as expected) for a weekend at this popular location. Whence we started out on the trail however, we didn't see too many people. Apparently they were all heading over to the Gold Creek Pond trails. We hiked the first two and a half miles or so in our microspikes, and then we started postholing up to our knees, so we decided to put on our snowshoes at that point. We continued up to the large clearing about 4 1/2 miles in, and we were informed by another hiker that the lake was not safe to access due to the recent heavy snowfall, and the steep slope down to it. Since we decided we were not interested in breaking new trail, we turned around at this point, and headed back down. As we reached the parking lot, the clouds began to break up and we were able to see the sun peeking out.
