Trip Report

Sun Top Snowshoe — Sunday, Mar. 1, 2020

Mount Rainier Area > Chinook Pass - Hwy 410

First the road - in the morning it was snow covered with just a track - looked like maybe one or two cars had been in there since the last snow. We've got semi-snow tires on - not a super aggressive tread, but a stickier rubber on and all wheel drive and had no problems with sliding or spinning. On the way out the road was mostly melted out to dirt with some slushy/slippery spots, but still navigable. There are some *ginormous* potholes - take it slow they are deep... if you are at all concerned park near the highway or at the first parking lot.

Trail conditions - there's snow the whole way but you won't need snowshoes until about 2 miles in. Up to that point the snow is shallow enough and/or there's a packed trail that is easy to keep to. After that fewer people have gone on and the snow gets deeper as you go. We started post holing there - and it's where we put on our snowshoes - by 4 miles in I doubt you'd be able to get anywhere without them - the snow is probably hip deep. Snow conditions varied all the way from fluffy powder to perfect snowball to almost solid... On the way down we left our snowshoes on longer, as there was enough snow that it wasn't uncomfortable and having them on was easier than carrying them,  until around 1/4 mile to go and then there just wasn't enough snow.... We turned around a 4 miles in - just a bit shy of the saddle.

We had the place entirely to ourselves - saw no other people all day, just a few footprints in the afternoon.
