Deception Pass State Park - Headlands / Rosario Head / Lighthouse Point — Tuesday, May. 12, 2020

Peaceful Tuesday morning start at Rosario Beach. Only one other car in parking lot when arrived. So no problem social distancing until after 10 when several cars of birders arrived and a car or two of hikers.

Headed away from all toward Rosario Head and spotted various wildlife immediately. A big mother raccoon was heading up the trail toward Rosario Head and a smaller raccoon headed down to Rosario Beach. On high alert nearby, a Townsend's chipmunk sat on a large piece of driftwood taking it all in. Meanwhile, in an effort to snap Chippy's picture, noticed four mature eagles circling overhead south of the tidepools where a heron was fishing.

The madrone trees are just lovely this time of year with their showy blossoms and forest floor confetti on display. Spotted a pair of California quail running through the madrone's shade for deeper cover. So much to observe in this small park area if you slow down and take the time.

Did not venture over to Bowman Bay or Vista & Lighthouse Points. The people numbers were growing and the trails are very narrow in spots. Another time. We are just happy to have our state parks open again.
