Mount Walker — Saturday, Jun. 13, 2020

Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal

Mt. Walker
Weather forecast called for 3/4" of rain, but we figured that'd make the hike even better. Turns out our gamble was right.

This hike is excellent when done early in the morning with a poor weather forecast. No cars, no people, clean fresh air, a well drained trail (thanks WTA crews!), and rhododendrons blooming everywhere. The rain held off almost the entire hike while we worked our way up the trail. It's a good 10-20% grade, excellent for training oneself for hiking in the mountains when the alpine trails open up.

As for the rhododendrons, if you go when we did, you'll see a constant change in blooms as you gain elevation. The best blooms were higher up in what could best be described as a flower tunnel. Simply stunning. Highly recommend the hike.

Big crowds came later mid day as we made it back to the car. Definitely start this hike early.
