Trip Report

Cedar Butte, Palouse to Cascades Trail - Rattlesnake Lake — Wednesday, Jun. 17, 2020

Snoqualmie Region > North Bend Area
View up the Middle Fork Snoqualmie River valley from the summit of Cedar Butte.

The road to Rattlesnake Lake is now OPEN, so the Cedar Falls Trailhead is accessible. Signs on the way in prohibiting hiking are only applicable to the Rattlesnake Lake Recreation Area, so if you stay left you can enter the parking area in Olallie State Park (Discover Pass required) and hike eastward from there. Only a handful of cars in the lot at 6:30pm on a perfect evening for a trail run.

Went up the direct trail to the summit of Cedar Butte and down the longer Blowout Trail. The latter requires some wading through vegetation but I was okay in shorts. Other than that, no obstacles on either save a couple muddy spots. Not much of a view from the blowout overlook, as the trees have grown up, but the sheer dropoff is a remnant of the event. Saw only two other hikers on the butte.

After descent of the butte, crossed over the PTCT to the network of (primarily mountain-bike) trails west of Boxley Creek to tag Peak 1185 because apparently I'm a dumpster-diver now. Did not encounter anyone in this area and found it more peaceful than expected. The view looking south over Christmas Lake is almost wilderness-like, but not quite.

Returned to the car at 8pm to find an almost empty parking lot. The state park closes at dusk but I'm not sure if/when the gate to the lot gets closed.

View looking south across Christmas Lake.
