Trip Report

Lake Constance — Sunday, Jul. 5, 2020

Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal

Did an overnight to Lake Constance as a tune up hike for longer adventures in the months to come. Past trip reports and the wta description are spot on: the trail could often be classified as a bushwhack; especially the very beginning and end of the climb. The burn/slide section at the bottom is probably the worst of it: I somehow took a wrong turn and ended up maybe 200 feet west of the "trail". By the time I realized my mistake it would probably have been equally dangerous to downclimb or to traverse east to the trail: sketchy crab walk sliding ensued. And I was not uniquely stupid: I encountered a pair of hikers later on up the trail who said they made the same mistake. If you go: be careful to stay close to the creek at least at the beginning of the climb and check GPS regularly.

The ascent took me 2:30 (not including the flat walk from the car), while the descent took 2:10.

When I reached the lake the clouds were moody and I was the only person there. There is a large craggy tree that has perfectly covered the trail that leads to the northern shore of the lake. I didn't even try and go around it and instead just opted to camp on a bluff on the SE shore.

very still morning
should've taken it more seriously
