A 3 day weekend of backpacking on the road less travelled was just what I needed this July 4 weekend. Toby the wonder dog and I headed east, way east, to avoid the hordes taking advantage of a long weekend and the good weather. I visited the sawtooth wilderness north of Lake Chelan and hiked up to Libby Lake. What an amazing larch basin!
We spent 2 nights in paradise, scrambling up to a high point over the lake and then over to Hoodoo peak. Amazing views and great wildflowers. Toby made it up and down Hoodoo along with her human (don't expect most dogs to make this difficult scramble).
Toby and I were the only folks there for the first night. 2 other parties camped there Saturday night. I also met one day hiker as I was scrambling up Hoodoo Saturday.
Saturday night I watched a golden eagle fly back and forth over the lake, sitting on ice on the far side of the lake, then on snow in one of the chutes, and then on rocks on the other side of the lake. It flew back and forth to these three spots for a few hours. Never seen that behavior previously, but it was interesting.
