Trip Report

Agnes Gorge — Monday, Jul. 6, 2020

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20
Agnes Mountain... or the Matterhorn?

Let me just put this up front - the National Park bus service is NOT running, but there is a way to get to High Bridge for Agnes Gorge, Howard Lake and McGregor Mtn trailheads. The Stehekin Valley Ranch has a bus running, mostly for their guests, but you will likely be able to hitch a ride if you find the bus driver and arrange a time. It might not perfectly match your schedule, but we got a ride up at 7:45 to hike Agnes Gorge.

The trail was in lovely condition and offered a great view of Agnes Mountain, but the bugs were quite an annoyance. Whenever we stopped on the trail itself we got swarmed by mosquitoes. When we reached the end of the trail at the (stunning) gorge, there weren't many bugs either. Also visible was a chain and connecting point for the old PCT bridge across Agnes Gorge, and a bent chair the builders used to go across the creek.

The bus came back at 1:10 and picked up some of us, but four of the group headed for a short jaunt to Howard Lake instead and got picked up at 4:10.
