Trip Report

Emmons Moraine, Glacier Basin — Wednesday, Jul. 15, 2020

Mount Rainier Area > NE - Sunrise/White River

We hiked to Glacier Basin past the campground to a nice viewpoint where we saw mountain goats on the hillside, then on our return trip we attempted to follow the Emmons Moraine side trail but were a bit unclear how far it goes. It seems to just peter out in some trees. Not sure if there is a viewpoint on it where you can get closer to the Emmons glacier, but at least what we saw was nice (bright blue-green lake overlook).

Trail to Glacier Basin is in very good condition. It was hot in the sun and very pleasant in the shade.

Although WTA page for this hike says the road to Sunrise is closed, that is not currently the case, and this trailhead is accessible by car (and all roads are paved). We drove in from the Northeast entrance, you go through the pay station and drive to the White River campground which is currently not open for camping but rangers there today told us it was OK to park there for this trail.
