Trip Report

Goat Creek — Thursday, Jul. 30, 2020

South Cascades > Mount St. Helens

Once we slowly navigated the 4 mile pot hole scattered gravel forrest road we arrived at the end of the road with not a single car in sight. We used the little turn about spot at the end of the road and used it to face our vehicle back downhill so if cars came we wouldn't get stuck. We pulled up to the trailhead at 9:30am.  Once we got out the mosquitoes swarmed us, so everyone got bug sprayed head to toe, and no one was bit. Only noticed them bad at the beginning of the trail thru all the growth, once the trail opens up we didn't see any.

We had 5 kids with us ages 8-15, and everyone enjoyed the special treasures on this hike, a small cave, a huge cathedral room cave, many little waterfall/ creek crossings and one huge waterfall you can walk all the way around (although it wasn't much of a rushing waterfall on this hot summer day, it was more of a shower, which was refreshing to walk under a bit). The kids enjoyed climbing up into the cave overhangs and exploring.

Only ran into a handful of couples on the trail, 2 sets had dogs with them, although we talked about how we were thankful we had not brought our dog on this particular trail, wouldn't have been easy on this narrow trail with one side going straight down a drop off.

We went 2 miles and then back out (4 miles round-trip).  The large cathedral falls & cathedral cave are just about 1 mile in from the beginning of the trail an easy hike to this point. Some up and down more after the cave, but still mild as hikes go. There were 4 cars parked around us when we got back, but got out easily.

Such a breathtaking area, we will be back to this one someday!
