Knock out over 5 miles in the Nooksack Wildlife Area between Marine Drive and Slater Road. The Nooksack Unit extends from the Nooksack River estuary north to WDFW's Tennant Lake Unit. Together these units protect the eastern bank of the Nooksack River from its mouth to Ferndale, as well as most of Tennant and Silver creeks.
We started at the Marine Drive parking area (Discover Pass required) and headed north toward Slater Road and Tennant Lake. Along this trail, there are several places to dip down to the Nooksack River. And our 4-legged companion took advantage of the river 'cooling' opportunities.
Met a few bike riders and fewer people than expected walking along the trail. Everyone seemed to be enjoying the sunny afternoon and we were grateful for the nice breeze in most spots.
Found ripe blackberries in the sunny parking area and some invasive teasels. Plenty of bull thistle along the trail and unripe blackberries too.
The trail is very flat and hard packed dirt along this stretch. No rocks or roots to worry about. And, we sure appreciate the shady areas within sight as the day got warmer.
All and all, a nice way to knock out some easy mileage on a day in the 70s, tickling the 80s.
