Trip Report

Colchuck Lake — Sunday, Aug. 2, 2020

Central Cascades > Leavenworth Area

Hiked Colchuck on a Sunday hoping that the crowd wouldn't be as bad as a Saturday but I was definitely wrong. There were large groups of folks and 95% of them had no masks on. 40% were good about trying to social distance but the majority of this hike is full of Tik Tok users that saw the lake as a spot to fill their feed with likes. This translates to no hiking etiquette (not letting people who are on the hike up go first), some trash on the trail and lake, ill-prepared hikers (saw quite a few ppl in flip flops, jeans). Oh, and can't forget the loud boom boxes.

The trail was very well-kept and not as steep as I thought it would be. Previous trip reports made me think this was a strenuous hike but if you've gone on a few this season already, this should be a piece of cake. Didn't run into any animals besides chipmunks for us this time around and we're glad we didn't. =]

The views of the lake are breathtaking and I personally like taking photos from the clearing right before you head down to the lake. Make sure you bring a swimsuit or something that's quick dry if you want to take a dip! Oh, an inflatable makes sense too!

We had the same experience with ill-prepared hikers a few weeks ago. Flip-flops, sandals and no water. Where do these people come from? The lack of trail etiquette could be attributed to inexperience. I talked to at least ten people who said it was one of their first hikes anywhere. One couple said it was on their "bucket list". Considering they looked to be in their 20's, I wondered what the hurry was about. My wife and I, who are in our 70's, hike this every few years and this was by far the most people we've ever seen in that area.
