Point of clarification from the main post: dogs ARE allowed to the pass (but not beyond). My main issue to highlight here relates to that, and it is that there is a significant portion of loose gravel/rocks of varying size. My dog hikes a lot with me And doesn’t usually have issues, but she is small (15lbs) and her little feet struggled with the rocks on the way down. I could tell they hurt so I carried her over the gravelly parts on the way down. She has a couple small rough spots on her pads this morning so just FYI if you do take your pups on this one keep an eye on their feet across the rocky part.
Other than that, great hike, easy to get to, and not overly busy even on a Sunday. Several open spots when I arrived at 8am, lot was full but not overflowing when I finished at 2:30pm.
Bugs weren’t too bad on the trail but at the top the horseflies were TERRIBLE Even with bug spray, so I didn’t stay long. Ended up resting longer near a waterfall on the way back down than at the pass due to this. All water crossings were low and manageable. Some mud and water on trail in spots thou so boots over shoes advised. A few flowers hanging on but probably all gone in 1-2 weeks; fall felt like it was close to moving in.
