Trip Report

Lake Elizabeth — Sunday, Aug. 23, 2020

Central Cascades > Stevens Pass - West

We headed up here on our way out of Money Creek Campground Sunday morning. The road is mostly in fine shape, typical Forest Service road. There is one repaired washout spot about one mile before the lake that is a bit sketchy for vehicles with low ground clearance. We did not go beyond Lake Elizabeth, so can't comment on the road conditions beyond this trail head. As the description states, this trail is mostly rough and not maintained. The bridge at the Money Creek outlet is definitely tilted downstream in a sketchy way, especially if it were wet. Parts of the trail were fine, others were VERY overgrown with Salmon Berry, some Devil's Club, ferns, etc. The section close to the trail head on the side opposite Money Creek was VERY wet - needed to change shoes back at the vehicle. Lots of ripe berries, though, so we were still happy to have taken the long drive up the road to get here on a beautiful, sunny day. Mosquitoes were not too bad, but I could see them being worse at different times of the day/year. Not a lot of other folks around, so overall a nice walk with some pretty views.

Hi! I have been wondering about this road. Do you think low clearance could get the the ugly spot one mile from the lake? We have pretty low clearance right now. The biggest issues are big dips and humps, also jutting rocks in the road that can't be maneuvered around. Potholes are usually ok if there is a way to get around them. We have driven to the spot where the original washout was and had no issues with that portion. But it's at least four miles from the lake I think. Quite a bit farther to walk. Also, is there a decent place to park at the bad spot a mile before the lake? Thank you so much for any info! I have been wanting to check this lake out for a long time.

AngMae, In this Trip report, I show a photo of the worst part of the road which is located just over 1 mile from the lake. https://www.wta.org/go-hiking/trip-reports/trip_report-2020-08-24-0119037231

Thank you very much! We have a Hyundai Accent right now, so have to be careful. Maybe the lowest car ever! But we know what we can handle. Just not sure if it was worth trying to get to the point that is one mile from the lake.
