Trip Report

Kelly Butte — Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2020

Mount Rainier Area > Chinook Pass - Hwy 410

Beautiful day for hike.  When I arrived around 11am, there were two cars at the trailhead.  I encountered two parties on the way up, one arrived at the lookout while I was there, then one more as I was heading down.  Large family of mountain goats was present on a nearby rock outcropping.  No mosquitos of any kind.

The trail is in pretty good shape.  The middle section, with the switchbacks, is a bit intense for sporadic-hikers like myself, but a lot of rest-stops and water got me through it.  About an hour and a half to get to the lookout, and an hour to get back to the trailhead, with an hour and some lunch at the top.  I would definitely make this hike again.

You can see the lookout from the trailhead
