Norse Peak Lollipop via Goat Lake Trail, Bullion Basin — Saturday, Aug. 29, 2020

Mount Rainier Area > Chinook Pass - Hwy 410

A thousand thanks to the crew camped at Goat Lake that built the great rock crossing (see picture 2) over the first gully on the Goat Lake trail!! I'm hoping that they will also be able to do the same to the second gully and maybe even clear the blowdowns further on down the trail (a couple of these are a little tricky to get around). Then this trail would be really accessible. It's a beautiful area, even though the trail often travels through a ghost forest (burnt in the fire). I call it the land that hikers forgot, there are always more elk hoof prints on the trail than there are boot prints. Today was the second time this year I've seen a large herd of elk (see the video footage). I have also seen a goat family high up in the peaks. Castle Mountain is striking and the peaks that the trail travels below are unique. Up until a few weeks ago the wildflowers were very good.

My weekend avoiding-crowds-due-to-Covid loop continues on the PCT south to Bullion Basin and then the forest road back to the Norse parking area. You meet the nicest people on the PCT. I met a group of thru hikers that were loving Washington and a very happy pannier-carrying dog with a friendly woman. The only other people I saw were the 6 groups as I went down Bullion Basin. I saw many more elk than people, including a few calves.
