Summit Lake — Friday, Aug. 28, 2020

Mount Rainier Area > NW - Carbon River/Mowich

This was easily the most beautiful hike we have had so far this summer.  We couldn't have asked for better weather.  The trail was in good condition with only a couple small water crossing, neither of which were any concern. The trail itself, while continuously up, mainly consists of lazy switchbacks.  My wife thought the climb would be worse and we were both pleasantly surprised how easily we made the climb to the top.  Elevation is also pretty spot on unlike some others we've done lately.  From the start point to Summit Lake was only about 2.6 miles.  There are plenty of trails around the lake and we found a nice one leading down to the water where we had lunch.  There are trails which lead up to the overlook, which I highly recommend, not just to add some mileage for this relatively short hike, but also because that's where the most spectacular views are located.  They're absolutely breathtaking.

The only real downside of this hike was the road in, which is pretty awful.  If you don't have a truck or high clearance vehicle I wouldn't recommend it.  Your car might make it, but it won't be worth the damage you put it through.

Parking at the trailhead is a premium.  We left early and were parked by around 8:30AM.  There was plenty of parking when we arrived, but the lot was full and cars were parking on the road four hours later after when we left.
