Goat Island — Tuesday, Sep. 1, 2020

Puget Sound and Islands > Bellingham Area

We kayaked over to Goat Island from Martha’s Beach (Shelter Bay in La Conner).  If you choose to kayak over, make sure you check the tide tables!  The current can run very strong through here and if you want to launch from Martha’s Beach, it can be difficult ( or impossible) durning a very low tide.

It took us about 20 minutes to paddle over- there was a little bit of chop and a current running.  We had to cross a boating path, which can be very busy at times, but tonight there was just one boat and they were kind enough to slow down so we didn’t have to deal with much wake.

We came in through the piling right by the goat and tied up the kayaked before climbing over the driftwood, up the 5 cement steps and up the trail.  This first short section was a bit loose and some parts of the trail were sliding away so we had to watch our step.  Further up on the trail there were a few Small trees down put they were easy to duck under or step over.

The fort was awesome and much larger than we expected.  Unfortunately, there is a lot of graffiti, some of it obscene.  It’s really too bad because it is really a magical and mystical place to wander around in the late evening.  We continued out the pathway to the right where the path became quite overgrown. We did find another building out there, but had to turn around because we were quickly losing our light paddle  back.

We will definitely go back to further explore the island!
