Trip Report

Kelly Butte — Saturday, Sep. 5, 2020

Mount Rainier Area > Chinook Pass - Hwy 410

Started out at the trailhead at 0530 hoping to catch a sunrise but the cloud cover was too low and thick. Only one car at TH at that time. Road was fine, I have a 4wd with high clearance but it would be fine for sedan if you go slow, typical logging roads.

Trail starts easily enough on the old road to the Original TH. Then it climbs steeply up rock formations. Almost turned back as these steep edges are outside of my comfort zone. It was over quickly though and I imagine the views on a clear day are pretty stellar. The trail then gently climbs until you reach the Ridgeline. It passes through blueberries and nobles with an easy trail until you reach the lookout. No views but we had it to ourselves.
Down was slower as the switchbacks are steep and the dirt is soft, some loose rock. Recommend good tread and poles if you use them. we passed several groups on our way back down. Heard many Pikas and saw one. Once we reached the old road we then passed many groups. At the trailhead there were maybe 10 cars, lot was overflowing. Several toilet paper flowers and garbage items at the TH 😭

My gps clocked us at 4.0mi round trip and +1,089ft gain
