The hike to Copper Lake is only 4 miles, but you gain about 2,400 feet in elevation, most of that occurring in the the last 1.5 miles. The hike in took us 4 hours. It’s work!
Trout Lake is the first lake you encounter at 1.5 miles and only a few hundred feet of gain. It’s pretty and calm and does have a bunch of campsites nearby. I plan to take my family here sometime. A good hike for kids!

There’s a lot to explore up here, including more lakes, but we’re saving that for when we can do a longer trip, hopefully next summer. We only had one night and wanted to have plenty of time to just sit and stare at the lake, have a swim, and mentally check out for a day.
Unfortunately, California wildfire smoke dropped down into this area from the upper atmosphere for much of the day Friday. It had mostly cleared out by the evening though.
We were so glad to have hiked in early Friday morning, as we didn’t see another soul on the trail and only a few people at the lake. Finding a campsite was a breeze.
On the hike out Saturday morning, however, we encountered around 60 or so hikers coming in, many of them planning to camp up there. The parking lot was jam packed and cars lined the side of the narrow dirt road for quite a ways. Good time for us to leave! I guess that's the main tip for this place is this: weekdays and early morning are you friends.
