Cowen and Ravenna Parks, Union Bay Natural Area — Sunday, Sep. 6, 2020

Puget Sound and Islands > Seattle-Tacoma Area
Ravenna Park

This was a big loop urban walk based on Walk #10 in Seattle Walks by David B. Williams with modifications.  We started this walk at Green Lake then following Ravenna Boulevard to Cowen and Ravenna Parks.  The walk through the lush greenery of Ravenna was a pleasant respite from busy Ravenna Boulevard.  From there we connected with the Burke-Gilman Trail heading east for a short stretch to a set of stairs at 36th Avenue NE.  Following 36th Avenue NE south we reached the Center for Urban Horticulture.  We made a little side trip through Yesler Swamp and then took the main trail through the Union Bay Natural Area.  Reaching the big parking lot by the athletic fields of the UW, we took the north stairway up into the campus.  We worked our way northwest through the campus with a pause at the Drumheller Fountain.  At the Burke Museum we cut over to the west, then north on Brooklyn Avenue NE until we reached Ravenna Boulevard and ending where we started at Green Lake.

This was a nice combination of urban and wooded walking on a pleasant late summer day.  Total distance, about 9 miles.
