Trip Report

La Rush/Bear Lakes — Monday, Sep. 21, 2020

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20

My wife and I stumbled on this little gem a couple of weeks ago. We headed out for a day exploring in the Jeep. I have to admit this was the time I did not complain about her having to pee because when I found a spot to pull over I discovered the trailhead. There is a some dispersed camping and few people up there.

Gus (my Cattledog) and I headed out and up the road to this trail a couple weeks later (a few days ago). I was a bit apprehensive doing this trail because it seems to be prime bear environment, which turned out to be the case. There was another car at the trailhead. When I first got out of the Jeep I heard something in the direction of the trail. Thinking it was the owner of the other car I paid little attention. We were about 100yrds into the trail when we came upon a fresh hole dug around the roots of a tree. Yup there are bears there.

We were in major bear aware mode the rest of the day as the blueberries are bountiful. The fall colors are just starting to come in, another week or so and it should be spectacular.

The lakes are pretty and very quite. Not the most epic place but the solitude makes it worthwhile. As some else has posted there is some scrambling and steep sections. The blueberry bushes will soak your britches if there has been a rain or early morning dew since they border a lot of the trail..

Had a great lunch and met a deer hunter up there just looking around. All in all it's a nice little trail, well maintained and just plain calm......
