I took a short morning hike covering a combination of the Grand Ridge Trail and the Coal Mine Loop. Very nice trail, well marked, and in excellent condition. Loads of free parking at the Central Park trailhead, which was already fairly busy by 9am.
One downside to this hike was the number of mountain bikers (none of which were following the signs posted at each junction, indicating that bikers yield to hikers). One couple had tied sleigh bells to their bikes, so that they announced their presence long before I saw them (which I appreciated). The worst were a quartet of 20-somethings who were bombing down to the Issaquah Preston Trail at full speed. I had about two seconds to react when I heard the first one's wheels clicking and he barely slowed as he flew by.
The other downside was coming upon a guy with a gas powered leaf blower at the junction of the Coal Mine Loop and the Issaquah-Preston Trail (nearly a mile from any trailhead). I was initially amused to see someone so diligently blowing fall leaves in the forest. I was later informed that this is a courtesy to the mountain bikers, so that they don't slip on the leaves. His noise followed me long after I had left him behind.
Given that the focus of this area seems so clearly mountain-bike-centric, I will probably leave this area to them and go elsewhere for future hikes.
