Trip Report

Silver Lake - Monte Cristo — Saturday, Oct. 17, 2020

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway

Set out Saturday morning around 8am from the Barlow Pass TH. One thing to note is that the bathroom is open with TP. The Monte Cristo trail is in fine condition. Some wet spots with running water before you cross the log. The main issues lied ahead on the Silver Lake trail.

Having done this trail before, I knew it can be a bit rough in spots but today the trail was especially so. The trail has a LOT of running water on it with plenty of rocks and roots to maneuver. It was all worth it though since we had the lake to our selves at the top. Only saw two people on the lower portion of the trail heading out from Monte Cristo. This trail could use a couple doses of TLC. I cleared one drain but there is plenty of drainage work that needs to be done. Maybe a WTA work party in the future?? Any who, we lucked out with weather and it turned out to be a beautiful fall day. If heading up to Silver Lake, enjoy the trail, and maybe clear a drain or two!

Thanks for the report. Hoping to go this weekend for an overnight and I'm expecting snow. You are right, the trail up from Monte Cristo really needs a lot of work. I wish WTA would schedule a BCRT. I would definitely participate. The trail from Poodle Pass to Twin Lake also need a lot of work.
