Kendall Peak Lakes — Thursday, Oct. 15, 2020

Snoqualmie Region > Snoqualmie Pass
GPS track (green)

This was my second attempt for Kendall Peak Point 5441, which is the right-most of the jagged, rocky peaks above the third Kendall Peak Lake. I was a bit surprised to see snow on the peaks so early; I was hoping for strictly summer conditions. But I was careful and it wasn't much of a problem. It took me exactly 2 hours to get up to the third lake (2200 ft gain), and another 2 hours to scramble up, and around to the south side of the peak.  Going above the third lake, much of the terrain is at 45 degrees, so it's slow.  From about 5100 ft, there are two gullies going up. I took the one on the left, and I think I saw some footprints from the guy who made the summit in April (he posted a report on Peakbagger). In the photo it doesn't look very steep, but both of these gullies are at 45 degrees. It's a tough walk. From the top, there is a little saddle, and continuing north goes down even more steeply. To the right (NE), going up the summit block, there is a narrow gully, even steeper. I stopped here. There was a ledge that I could probably get up, but I wasn't sure I could get down safely, being by myself. Too bad! I'll have to find someone to go up there with next summer. (Let me know if you're interested!)  In deep snow, the steep slopes will be easier, with an ice axe; but that summit block will be icy, and may be impossible. Disappointing, but I got close.

I met a nice couple just above the third lake. I hope David finds this report; I know I'm a few days late!

2885 ft gain, 11 miles, 8:15 hours.
