Dry Creek — Sunday, Nov. 1, 2020

Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal

My husband and I took our two senior dogs on this tail and loved it! One of the dogs has mobility issues and can't handle really steep hikes. There was one section of rock "stairs" that she struggled with, but otherwise the trail was a great one for her. There were some slightly loose rocks in a few sections that she floundered over, but the trail is very well maintained and most folks will find it easy to navigate. We only went a couple of miles in and then turned around before it got too much for her (and as the trail was heading away from the water so we were losing our interesting views). We spent the rest of our time in the dry part of the lake among the stumps, which are absolutely fascinating to see and climb around on. The fall foliage and way the light was hitting the water and surrounding mountains was absolutely beautiful! It's a bit odd walking the gravel "residential" road in order to get to the real trailhead, but it's a very peaceful walk. Perhaps in the summer it would be busier, but we saw almost no activity among the houses. We did meet one of the neighbors who was incredibly friendly. This would be a wonderfully relaxing place to vacation! We only saw one other group while we were on the trail, so it certainly seems to be one that is often overlooked. Depending on when you go, I'd assume you might have the whole place to yourself. All in all, it can be hard to find truly interesting easy hikes, and this one definitely met our goals. It isn't totally flat - there is some incline - but it was a perfect fit for our old dogs who mostly just want to get out and sniff, and we enjoyed the beautiful scenery.
