Trip Report

Summerland - Panhandle Gap — Sunday, Nov. 1, 2020

Mount Rainier Area > NE - Sunrise/White River

My buddy and I decided to trail-run Summerland one last time before the snow came in and shut down the roads and made many of these trails inaccessible. We started at 5:50am and finished just before 9am.

Highway 410 was still being worked on and has traffic diverted to the side road and controlled with a traffic light. You'll run into this if you head up after sunrise.

On the way up to Summerland, we thought that there would be some snow, but, to our surprise, there wasn't any. It was very cold and this led to some freezing standing water and slippery parts of the trail up near the switchbacks. Be careful coming down and watch your footing.

When we reached Summerland, we had a quick snack near the stream and began our descent. On the way down, we encountered three other hikers heading up that, like us, were probably hoping to sneak in one last hike before the snow starting falling.

The privy on the way to the trailhead is closed, so be prepared for that.

It was a wonderful morning for a trail-run and the conditions were perfect. I hope to hit a few more trails before the end of the year, but this was a great way for me to close out the higher-elevation trail-running season.

Happy Trails!

Any idea what animal made these tracks?
