Hawks Prairie Reclaimed Water Ponds — Friday, Nov. 20, 2020

Puget Sound and Islands > Seattle-Tacoma Area

We had planned to hike at Tumwater Falls Park hoping to see the spawning salmon, but when we arrived at the parking lot we found the park was closed. We learned from their website that the park is closed because of Covid and has been since March and that it probably won't open again until Pierce County reaches Stage 4! Hawks Prairie Ponds are a short distance north on I-5 in Lacey so we decided to meander there. This is not a destination hike from Seattle, but a nice area to explore if you are in the area and need to stretch your legs or as an add-on hike to another hike in the area. Hundreds of widgeons were seen, a bufflehead pair, a few mallards and a group of bushtits! Several others were enjoying the day. The trails are wide and most were wearing masks so social distancing was easy! Many of the Doug firs were covered at their base with thousands of British Soldier lichens! The link below describes the area.
