A nice winter hike the day after the solstice. Even though it was thirty three degrees there was no ice on the trail other than what was falling off the trees. The ground was to warm from the strange episode yesterday of warm temperatures and then freezing and snow. The trail was a mixture of snow and mud and running water. The water level at the lake is high. It was almost touching the the footbridge that goes over the outlet where the Two Dollar Trail comes out at the trail that goes around the lake. As the sun came out the trees around the lake were dropping a lot of snow bombs. It wasn't unusual to hear people yelp as they got dumped on.
The only obstacles on the trail were a few downed trees but all were easy to step over. Cleator Road doesn't have potholes as such but rather lots of ruts. Any vehicle can make it through. The road is still gated just beyond the trail head so the only way to go from there to Cyrus Gates Overlook is to walk or bike although I don't know how bad the washout on the road is.
