Trail of Two Forests, Merrill Lake Conservation Area - Kalama River Falls — Sunday, Dec. 27, 2020

South Cascades > Mount St. Helens

With what we considered less than ideal snow conditions we opted for two hikes rather than the planned xc ski near Mt. St. Helens.  We hiked to Kalama River Falls and hiked the Trail of Two Forests near the Ape Caves.  The Ape Caves are closed though there were a couple of cars parked in the Trail of Two Forests parking lot, whose occupants walked up the gated-road toward the caves, and one car was parked off the road near the gate.  Since the people we saw in the parking lot were not hiking the Trail of Two Forests, the total fellow hikers we encountered on each hike today was 2 (one pair each).

Both trails are in good shape.  We explored off trail a bit on the way back from Kalama River Falls, scaring a few elk in the process. It's been many years since we checked out the lava casts at the now named Trail of Two Forests, which are always cool to see.
