Trip Report

Artist Point Snowshoe — Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020

North Cascades > Mount Baker Area

I arrived at the upper Ski resort at 8AM and barely found a place to park!  And by the time I left, cars were parked all the way down to Picture Lake on both sides on the road.  There were hundreds of people on Komo Kulshan today!

The groomed ski runs were closed for avalanche control until 9AM.  The snowshoe trail up to the Visitor's Center was an alternate route for many skiers and snowshoers, including me.  There were no signs of possible avalanches on the trail up to Artist Point, but that will change quickly with a new storm system arriving tonight.

The sunrise was great, but I was too late to enjoy it.  Hikers who stayed overnight told me it was gorgeous.  I needed to arrive at least an hour earlier.

The lighting was flat and unusual today.  There were a few minutes of sky that were partly blue.  I saw Baker's peak for less than a minute when I reached the ridge.

The snow is great, the views were good at times, and the exercise felt great.  I'm glad that I went.

Just a quick peek of Baker's summit

Can Artist Point trail be done with just microspikes or are snowshoes a must?

The trail is popular, so it is packed down most of the time. If you use spikes, expect to posthole at times. And you will have to stay on the trail. Snowshoes are preferred.
